Volleyball Association honors Lipsitz again
Penn State men's volleyball freshman middle hitter Max Lipsitz has been named the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks, conference officials announced.
It is the fourth conference accolade for the Nittany Lions this year, as Lipsitz was previously honored on March 27 and senior outside hitter Alex Gutor and junior setter Luke Murray have also been recognized.
Lipsitz was nearly flawless in three matches last week, committing only six errors and finding the floor on more than 57 percent of his attacks. At No. 8 Ohio State last Wednesday, the freshman attacked at a .478 clip while falling just shy of his career mark with 14 kills, also setting a personal best with four service aces. Against East Stroudsburg he was perfect on all five of his attacks and added four blocks, while at George Mason on Saturday, Lipsitz helped the Nittany Lions finish the conference season undefeated with his career-best 16 kills on .565 hitting. For the week, Lipsitz provided 35 kills on .569 hitting with 10 total blocks.
Track star Cox earns track player of week
Following regional-qualifying performances in both the 400-meters and the 4x400-meter relay last weekend, Nittany Lion sprint-star Shana Cox has been named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this year.
Cox took top honors in the quarter mile at the Auburn Tiger Classic last weekend, clocking a season-best and regional-qualifying 52.41.
Cox's performance is the fastest run in the Big Ten this spring, as well as the third fastest mark in the NCAA.
The junior would go on to help the 4x400 squad improve its time to 3:34.81, also the top mark in the Big Ten this season.
Cox is the defending conference champion in the 200-, 400-, 4x100, and 4x400, and is also the reigning east region gold medalist in the quarter.
Cox and the Nittany Lions remain on the road this weekend, traveling to the highly regarded Sea Ray Relays, hosted by the University of Tennessee, in Knoxville, Tenn.
Competition will begin on Friday and will conclude on Saturday.
Saltsman recognized by Lacrosse League
Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse player Dan Saltsman has been named the ECAC Lacrosse League Defensive Co-Player of the Week for the week ending April 8.
Saltsman shares the defensive honor with Rutgers' Chris O'Dougherty.
Saltsman anchored a Penn State defense that held the nation's fifth-ranked offense to only seven goals, and just one in the second half, as Penn State downed Hobart 12-7 in a league battle.
Saltsman shut down HC's offensive leader Dan Veltman, holding the talented Statesman attacker to only one goal on four shots.
He also had two ground balls in the contest.
