Women's lacrosse breaks even after exciting weekend

For The Collegian

It was a wild weekend for the women's lacrosse team.

The No. 10 Nittany Lions participated in the ALC/ ACC Challenge and made sure that they were noticed. Friday night, they downed the No. 2 North Carolina Tar Heels in double overtime, a dramatic 8-7 upset. They followed that win yesterday with a hard-fought game against the No. 3 Maryland Terapins that ultimately ended in a 10-9 loss.

"I was really proud of them," Penn State head coach Suzanne Isidor said following yesterday's match.

Down 4-3 at halftime during Friday night's match against the Tar Heels, the Lions came from behind with a very impressive second half that culminated in sophomore midfielder Kerry Shea's game-winning goal with only 47 seconds left in double overtime.

"The defense was outstanding," said Isidor. "We have been down before. I did not have to say much to them at halftime. They had a lot of confidence the whole way through."

That is not to say that it was not a tough game for Penn State's back line.

"North Carolina has one of the best attacks in the country," Isidor said. "We had no special matchups because of how good they are. We needed our defense to play really well and they did."

Yesterday's game was filled with energy displayed by both teams. Penn State was down 3-1 to start but came back to take the lead in a back-and-forth half. Maryland opened the second half with four straight goals, taking a 9-6 lead.

The Lions were able to tie the game in while dominating ball control, with possession for most of the second half.

Despite Penn State's best efforts, with a plethora of chances to take the lead, the Terrapins scored the go-ahead goal with 1:01 left in the game and held on to pull off with the win.

"We have nothing to be upset about," said junior midfielder Jessi Lieb, who contributed two goals and two assists in yesterday's effort. "Maryland is a good team, and they made it really difficult for us. They put pressure on us all game, but we hung in there."

The Lions held their own against another highly ranked team following Friday's upset. It could have gone either way with the tremendous efforts by both teams.

"Coming back after that emotional win Friday, we were ready," Isidor said. "We could have won the game. Shooting the ball better would have been great. Our ball control was good. It was a good thing to see.

"I was truly happy with how we performed this weekend. The only thing better would have been pulling off the win against Maryland."
