The No. 6 Penn State men's volleyball team entered this weekend with a goal: to finish its EIVA regular season play undefeated.
After wins against East Stroudsburg, 3-0 (30-23, 30-21, 30-18), and George Mason, 3-1 (32-30, 19-30, 30-25, 30-20) over the weekend, the Nittany Lions (19-6, 12-0 EIVA) can safely say mission accomplished.
Interestingly though, was the fashion in which Penn State did so, as both matches followed previous scripts.
On Senior Night against East Stroudsburg, it was the trio of seniors Alex Gutor, Aaron Smith and Ryan Walthall that stood out, just like it had numerous times over the course of their careers.
For the first time this season, Smith led the Lions at opposite, tallying 15 kills on .545 hitting, establishing a new season-high for kills and coming just short of his career-high of 16 established last season.
The only other Lion joining Smith with double-digit kills was Gutor, who contributed 10 in the winning effort.
"We were kind of slow in the beginning," Gutor said. "But we picked it up as the game unwinded. We did a great job."
Saturday night against George Mason, the Lions were trailing late in Game 1.
For the second time this season, Penn State needed someone to step up and deliver, and for the second time this season against George Mason, backup setter Travis Foltz led the Lions to a come from behind victory with his serve.
Penn State, though it dropped Game 2, sailed after halftime as the team cruised to victories in Games 3 and 4.
"We kind of ended on a good note," Penn State head coach Mark Pavlik said. "Some games you struggle to get through it. I thought we did a good job of not settling."
Prior to this weekend, Pavlik said these matches would show this team's character.
Against George Mason, the team showed its character in coming from behind.
Against East Stroudsburg, the seniors showed what they've meant to this team all season, and afterward, showed they were still focused on the task at hand.
"It didn't really hit me," Walthall, Penn State's vocal leader, said of Senior Night. "I don't think it's going to until we actually play our last home match. Even though it's Senior Night, we all know that we got two more games ahead of us. I think that last game is when it's probably going to hit me.
"I'm not looking at that as my last home game," Gutor said. "I'm looking more into May [the postseason] than April 6."
