Nearly all the tournaments on the Penn State men's golf team's schedule are "invitational." These days, the team is anxious to attend every one of them.
Coach Greg Nye said the third place finish at the Pinehurst Invitational tournament stimulated a good amount of momentum that the team will use for their tournament today in the Marshall Invitational at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W.V.
Nye is now looking for his Nittany Lions to fulfill some high expectations.
"The team has been outstanding," head coach Greg Nye said. " I think a top-five finish would be nice, but I think we can go into the tournament looking for a win."
This opinion is not exclusive to the coach, either.
"I definitely agree with Coach Nye," junior Robert Rohanna said. "I have no doubts, and I think if we can manage to play a little bit better, I think we can definitely get a win."
These expectations are in spite of the poor weather predicted for the tournament. Forecasts call for temperatures in the low 40s with a good chance of rain. Nye admittedly said he sees the weather posing a problem.
"We're going to be getting some cold temperatures and wind so on a tight course like this one, it's going to be tough to play," Nye said.
Since there is a chance a second day cancellation may occur, Nye has asked the team to take a different strategy for the first day.
"I have remarked to the team that we need to put our best foot forward early on the first day just in case it is our only day to play," Nye said.
The Lions will be coming off of a 17-day layoff since its last competitive play. Although the Lions played frequently in their 12-day road trip, the lack of play since then could make the team rusty or unfocused. Rohanna said the opposite and that the down time will prove to be a positive factor.
"You need a break from golf sometimes," Rohanna said. "We played a lot of golf over spring break and it is time consuming. It makes you tired mentally and physically, so we definitely enjoyed the layoff.'
The rest may come to be critical since the Lions are scheduled to play in tournaments every weekend for the next five weeks without any more layoffs.
"We were fortunate," Nye said. We had some time to catch up on some schoolwork and we got to relax a little bit. So heading into our five week schedule, I think we are definitely ready to play."
