With his cheeks puffed out and his mouth full, Sheffield Marcus tried his hardest not to laugh, which would force him to either spit or swallow his mouthful of water.
Unable to control his laughter, the audience of over 100 students cheered "he swallowed it!"
Marcus (sophomore-medicine), chapter historian of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, was on the greek team in Penn State's version of Wild 'N Out late last night at Redifer Commons.
Wild 'N Out was part of Ebony and Ivory Week, a week-long celebration of diversity aimed at unifying all four greek councils.
Two teams of about six guys each, greeks on one and audience members on the other, went head to head trying to be the funniest in a re-creation of the MTV show.
"I think everybody watches MTV," Sheffield said. "I think everybody will enjoy this event."
Along with the water game, the guys competed in a game with random props -- a large black paddle and a white plastic sheet. The goal of this game was to make fun of the other team using their assigned prop.
The teams weren't afraid to make racial jokes or to use bathroom or sexual humor. Audience members cheered or jeered at the jokes, making their opinions known. But the judges/DJs made the final decision on whether or not the joke was good or bad.
A good joke was met with a blaring airhorn sound; a bad joke received a gun shot sound.
"The sound effects are really good," Stacy Young (sophomore-marketing) said. Young said she is not involved in a sorority, but when she saw the event, she stopped to watch.
In another game, the competitors tried to woo three females from the audience with their best pick-up lines.
Seeing friends joking around made the event even better than MTV's version for some audience members.
"This one's actually funnier to me than the one on TV because I know a lot of the people up there," Lynette Davis (freshman-theatre) said.
Of all the events in Ebony and Ivory Week thus far, Wild 'N Out has had the best turnout, Alpha Phi Alpha treasurer Marcus Kellam said.
This year is the 24th year of Ebony and Ivory Week, which Alpha Phi Alpha typically runs.
"We bring [a variety of greeks] together to try to give a united atmosphere," Marcus said.
The groups involved with Ebony and Ivory week are ethnically diverse, ranging from an Asian American interest sorority to Latino fraternities.
The last event in Ebony and Ivory Week is the Golden Seduction Party which will be held tonight in Heritage Hall from 10 p.m. until 2 a.m. Tickets are $5 before midnight and $7 after midnight. Alpha Phi Alpha will sponsor the event along with Sigma Gamma Rho sorority, but it is open to anyone.
