Ramblin' Man
The Innovators Series continues with David Lindley

For The Collegian

Ask the programming manager of The State Theatre to describe eclectic solo artist David Lindley, and the answer might surprise you.

"David likes to make a lot of weird noises with weird instruments," Joe Apfelbaum said.

Lindley will be playing at The State Theatre, 130 W. College Ave., tomorrow night at 7:30 as part of the State Theatre's Innovators Series.

Michael Morris, Lindley's representative at the Rosebud Agency, said Lindley never plays the same set at a performance.

"He plays a mix of American folk, blues, African, Celtic and Arabic music, and basically plays material from 30 plus years," Morris said.

Lindley is well known for his work with singer, songwriter Jackson Browne and his own band El Rayo-X .

He has also worked with artists like Ben Harper, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton and Rod Stewart during the past three decades.

Although he has never seen Lindley live before, Apfelbaum said he is looking forward to the show.

"We try to get well-known artists who are musically respected to play here," he said. "I've probably heard a million records that David Lindley has been on."

The State Theatre marketing and sales manager Kristy Cyone said that she feels a lot of people will travel to see the show.

"People are excited that he is coming to State College," she said. "I have heard a lot of people from out of town are coming to see him."

Apfelbaum said he expects the performance to appeal to a wide audience.

"I think we will get a fair amount of travelers, locals, guitar wankers, musicians and Jackson Browne fans," said Apfelbaum. "We'll get people who know quality and good music."

Of students who typically show up for State Theatre shows, Apfelbaum described them as "musically adventurous."

"It is an intellectual student community here," he said. "I would never underestimate their thirst to see cool things."

Tickets are $25 and can be bought at the box office.

"I am always the voice of low ticket prices," said Apfelbaum. "Students will definitely be getting their money's worth. Plus, the sound in here is amazing."
