Movin' On acts disappoint

The band selection for Movin' On 2007 is extremely disappointing ("Movin' On chooses acts," March 28). In past years, the bands selected were much more well-known and loved by the students. Phantom Planet is a band that had one song, "California," and then did nothing other than having the theme song on the canceled show The O.C. As a headliner, they are not an impressive band by any means. Also, spending $15,000 seems a bit ridiculous. From my personal experiences from booking bands, I believe the Movin' On committee could have worked out a ton of better deals with more popular bands if they knew what they were doing. The other bands are just horrendous. You, Me and Everyone We Know is just a typical punk band from Washington D.C. that is unsigned and usually on small, unknown tours. Days Away is a Pennsylvania band that was just dropped from the Fueled by Ramen record label based in Tampa. They are a decent band but are not big enough to play Movin' On. Piebald is a medium size Indie band from Boston that is on their way down in popularity. Finally, Authority Zero is a relatively small reggae/indie band from Arizona that will have absolutely no draw at Penn State, so what was the point of putting them on the bill?

Even the local bands that were picked for the battle baffled me. Two of the most popular local bands, Cloverleaf and The Minor White, weren't selected to play the battle. What is going on here? Even though I felt last year's lineup was terrible as well, it looks like Coachella compared to this year's. Jameela Truman is great for taking the responsibilities and putting her heart into Movin' On, but the least she could do is surround herself with people who have experience in booking bands to fulfill Movin' On's huge potential. This year's lineup is a big disappointment and very unimpressive. For someone who has been a director for more than two years, it would have been nice to see a respectable lineup.
