I'm glad to see that Penn State is trying to go on an energy diet. I do believe, however, that they are not doing two additional things that could really cut our footprint down. First, our lab computers run all day, every day around here. How many people are in the Pollock undergrad library at 2 a.m.? Beaver's lab closes, yet the computers still run. Using the lab techs on duty to shut down most of the computers overnight would put a nice dent in our energy use. Also, has anyone considered solar panels for our buildings? Obviously this would have to be phased in long term, but there are cases when solar provides a strong majority of the power that buildings need, at least during the day (when power is more expensive).
So to OPP and the administration -- great job. Just don't stop now.
