Let's get this all out of the way. Some of this might be sappy, as most of the senior columns tend to be, but I'm a pretty predictable guy, so I'll go with it.
I'm not a real person --probably because most of my life has been spent watching reruns of Seinfeld.
Because of that show I'm extremely cynical, and most of what I do isn't based in any kind of reality.
So if you're not a real person, how do you give your send-off?
How do I let it be known that I was there and lived all I could for a short period of time?
In my opinion, you make a list of things that don't really matter in the grand scheme of things, particularly songs.
The basis for this idea is a line from the movie High Fidelity:
"What really matters is what you like, not what you are like -- books, records, films -- these things matter. Call me shallow but it's the damn truth."
So this is my "life" up until April 2, 2007:
Built To Spill -- "You Were Right": This song has classic rock lines inserted in the lyrics. Totally referenced-based yet unique, kinda like me if I don't say so myself.
The Beatles -- "Octopus's Garden": This is the first song I ever remember hearing. I was three and my older sister, my dad and I were in his old tan truck. Just like yesterday...
Led Zeppelin -- "The Ocean": I was raised on classic rock radio. Deal with it.
Pearl Jam -- "Yellow Ledbetter": I remember when I was about eight attempting to sing along to this, and my grandfather heard me and asked if I knew "what the heck I was saying."
I think it's the first time I impressed anyone with music knowledge.
The Dismemberment Plan - "Academy Award": All I can think of is getting a ride to high school from my old friend Zack, eating fruit snacks because I woke up too late for a real breakfast.
The Apartment Jamb -- "Reggae Jam": A song from a band I was in with friends in high school.
At our senior year talent show, I smashed my bass into a million pieces, and for one moment I was cool.
The Beach Boys -- "Sloop John B": This one makes me homesick every time.
The Clash -- "Jimmy Jazz": This is the basis for the nickname that some people call me. I hate the nickname. Please stop. This song is still awesome.
Weezer -- "Say It Ain't So": My name is in a Weezer song.
Van Morrison -- "Ring Worm": This is the embodiment of my sense of humor. If you understand that, you're awesome.
My Morning Jacket -- "One Big Holiday": Upon hearing this song I released the most energy I've ever exuded at anytime. I was literally shaking when I saw/heard this because I couldn't contain whatever it was that was coming out of me.
Miles Davis -- ''Round Midnight": Best song ever, hands down. PUT YOUR HAND DOWN.
Bill Conti -- "Gonna Fly Now (Rocky Theme)": Although being at Beaver Stadium against Ohio State in 2005 was the greatest sports moment of my life, my heart is 100 percent into the love/hate relationship with Philly sports.
Sigur Rós -- "Staralfur": If you get this, you know who you are.
Bob Dylan -- "Simple Twist of Fate": This explains the feeling after every failed attempt at a relationship or crush on a girl.
The Hold Steady -- "Killer Parties": Those killer parties almost killed me.
Arcade Fire -- "Wake Up": Arcade Fire is the latest band I've gotten into. I've decided my fun in life will end on May 5, after I see this song played live at Radio City Music Hall.
