Grad assistant charged with assault
A Penn State graduate assistant was charged with aggravated assault yesterday after State College police said he injured a paramedic while attempting to jump out of the back of an ambulance. Police said James R. Labenberg, 44, approached a woman Monday on the 100 block of West College Avenue and asked for drugs and sex. Police observed that the man was intoxicated and took him to the State College police station, according to the criminal complaint. Labenberg then decided to go to the hospital for treatment and an ambulance was summoned, according to the complaint. Labenberg attempted to jump out of the back of the ambulance "in an attempt to harm himself," according to the complaint. A paramedic who attempted to stop Labenberg told police he shoved, grabbed and punched her, according to the complaint. Labenberg was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jonathan Grine on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, harassment and public drunkenness. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. today at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.
