Women's tennis fall short against Gophers

Spring has finally arrived and the Penn State's women's tennis team had the chance to play No. 59 Iowa outdoors at the Sarni Tennis Center, but the good weather ended as the Nittany Lions faced No. 53 Minnesota.

The Lions (7-9, 1-4 Big Ten) had a big weekend, competing against the two Big Ten opponents, the Hawkeyes and the Golden Gophers, who both had victories over the Lions. The Lions were defeated by Iowa, 2-5, and Minnesota, 3-4.

The Lions opened with a 1-2 showing in doubles play against the Gophers. Minnesota's Tijana Koprivica and Ida Malmberg had the first doubles point and took the early 1-0 match lead with an 8-5 win over Sarah Lotto and Jenny Shular.

The Lions then tied the doubles competition at 1-1 with a third pairs win by Dorothy Dohanics and freshman Lauren McCarthy over Karina Chiarelli and Danielle Mousseau, 9-7.

Seniors Sasha Abraham and Andreea Niculescu fell to Lindsay Risebrough and Ashley Schellhas, 7-9.

The Lions were untouched as they picked up wins in the first three singles matches. Shular evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Risebrough, while sophomore Lauren Holzberg had a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mousseau.

McCarthy secured the third victory in singles over Chiarelli (5-7, 6-3, 6-2).

On Friday, the Lions faced against Iowa who was coming off a 7-0 victory against Ohio State. Although the Lions were not able to get a victory over the Hawkeyes, they had the chance to play outdoors for the first time this season.

In doubles, Lotto and Shular defeated Hillary Mintz and Merel Beelen, 8-4.

Shular also had a victory in singles against Kayla Berry, 6-2, 6-4.

Dorothy Dohanics beat Kelcie Klockenga, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
