The Penn State Lady Ruggers would not be denied this weekend as they left Annapolis, Md., the MARFU champions.
In dominating fashion, the Lady Ruggers beat West Chester and Navy in back-to-back days.
In the semifinal against West Chester on Saturday, Penn State was troubled by penalties and hit-or-miss play in the first half but came out for the second half more relaxed and loose, joking around and laughing.
"We're the type of team that plays better when we laugh," flanker Karly McVerry said.
McVerry's statement proved to be true as Penn State settled into its game plan, moving the ball wide and using its speed to beat the defense.
Penn State opened up the game in the second half and walked away with a 51-17 win.
In the final game on Sunday against Navy, the Lady Ruggers dominated from the opening whistle, dominating the scrums and keeping Navy on its heels the entire game. Penn State ended up winning 67-10.
The Lady Ruggers' speed was too much for Navy as the back three took over the game. Penn State also rucked with an intensity that Navy was unable to match.
Wing Aleana Kuhn played an amazing game by totaling five tries, while fullback Diana Klein added three of her own. Other scores came from wing Anne Blair, outside center Lauren Rosso and prop Pam Coutts.
Even eightman Kate Daley got in on the act, converting four times off of kicks.
After Penn State opened up a sizeable lead, the defense started to let up a bit and Navy took immediate advantage, scoring two quick tries.
But that was all Navy could muster as the Lady Ruggers clamped down defensively.
"I don't think we've ever played a game like that against quality competition," Penn State coach Pete Steinberg said.
Penn State hosts a match with Indiana University of Pennsylvania and travels to Philadelphia to take part in the Keystone Tournament over the next two weeks.
Penn State's road to the national championship continues the weekend of April 21-22, when the Lady Ruggers host the round of 16.
