PSU to hold first health fair

Collegian Staff Writer

As a part of National Public Health Week 2007, the first Public Health Fair will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in HUB Heritage Hall.

National Public Health Week (NPHW), which began yesterday and will run through Friday, is an initiative started by the American Public Health Association (APHA) designed to promote awareness.

Students from the Health Policy and Administration Healthcare Leadership course organized the fair for a class project. The students worked with the Department of Health Policy and Administration at Penn State and Alpha Epsilon Delta, a premedicine fraternity, to organize the fair for the Penn State and Centre County community.

The fair will provide information and resources on illness prevention and awareness. Free giveaways, food, blood pressure testing, personalized exercise programs, germ testing and hand-washing techniques will be just some activities at the fair, Randy Coulthard (senior-health policy administration) said.

Local and university organizations including the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Hershey Medical Center, University Health Services and the Mount Nittany Medical Center will be participating in the fair.

Faculty from the University of Pittsburgh, Drexel University and West Chester University will be attending the fair to present information on their public health programs.

Shaira Morales (senior-health policy administration) and Stephanie Sullivan (senior-health policy administration) presented the health fair idea because Penn State had not participated in the event, Coulthard said. From there, other students from the class joined the effort, he said.

Stephanie Donolli (senior-health policy administration) and Reshma Patel (senior-health policy administration) headed the community outreach committee for the fair.

With the help of the Park Forest Middle School, Donolli and Patel held a banner contest to raise student interest about the week and its purpose. Students were given the opportunity to submit banner designs that incorporated Penn State's slogan for the initiative, "Taking the First Step." The winning design will be made into a banner that will be displayed at the Osmond Building entrance throughout the week, she said.
