My interest is always at peak level when The Daily Collegian does a series on alcohol consumption on the Penn State campus. I would like to first express my distate in Mayor Welch's comments about those who drink heavily. Telling students who "drink their brains out" to "get a life" was uncalled for. I would suspect that a minuscule percentage of the student population is inebriated on a consistent basis. Telling students to "get a life" does not tackle any sort of problem. From stories of former alumni, drinking at Penn State was definitely different 20 years ago, but not as Police Chief Tom King expressed. Remember, consumption of beer in kegs was permitted in the dorms 20 years ago and beyond. From what I understand, drinking was an acceptable activity for all ages. I applaud Mr. Mahon for speaking out on goals toward halting alcohol-related deaths. I believe DUI checkpoints on Atherton Street and at the point where College Avenue meets the downtown area would encourage those thinking of drinking and driving to think smarter in those situations. That could be a collaborative effort with the state police.
