Penn State dominates triple-header against Tartans

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State baseball club has now played Carnegie Mellon six times in the last two seasons, and the total score of the games stands at Penn State, 66, Carnegie Mellon, 4.

Last season, the Tartans failed to put a run on the scoreboard in the three-game set at home and took until their second game of this season's series to put a four next to their names.

Penn State dominated on Saturday with scores of 20-0, 12-4 and 9-0 at Governor's Park in Bellefonte. The weekend's contest was supposed to include a doubleheader Saturday with a final game played yesterday, but the rain in the forecast prompted the switch to a tripleheader.

Before the games, Penn State coach Bill Lippert warned his No. 1 ranked team in the National Club Baseball Association to not to play down to the second-year NCBA school's level.

"We had a solid performance from everyone out there," team president Greg Lisa said. "We continued to do what we do best and didn't play down to their level and won all three games."

Lisa started the third game of the day on the mound and gave up three hits while striking out four batters.

He said it was important that his team continued the strong play they showed in spring training, where Penn State went 6-0, going undefeated for the first time in team history.

"We wanted to take these games and make a statement to the other teams in our league," Lisa said. "We know the other teams are out to get us and we wanted to show what we can do."

The first game was all Penn State, as it scored five runs in each of the first two innings and 10 in the fourth. The game was ended in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

The Tartans managed one hit all game, a double by leadoff hitter James Langhauser, off of junior Pete Chalfin. The one hit is one more than they got off of Chalfin last year.

Outfielder Ryan Albright hit a grand slam in the game to put away Carnegie Mellon.

Game 2 saw some offense from the Tartans, but Penn State scored seven times in the first inning.

The four runs off of Brian Binder, who gave up a home run in the game, were the first runs scored by the
Tartans in five games against Penn State.

"We were just feeding off all of that moment from spring training in these games," Lisa said. "Everyone came away pretty positive on what we can do."

Lisa said that with the strong pitching from Binder, Chalfin and himself, supported by the power of Albright, Ryan Fitzgerald and Donnie Howard -- all hit home runs in the tripleheader -- makes this team one of the best at the club level.

The next games for Penn State will be this coming weekend at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park against West Virginia. This will be first time the team will be able to play a game on the field.

Lisa hopes that this weekend will show the rest of the league what they have in store.

"We're the No. 1 ranked team in the league," Lisa said. "Every team is out to get us."
