Letter to the Editor
Student defends university

In his letter to the editor, Ty Strohl has publicly stated his desire to disown Penn State University entirely, to which I say 'good riddance.' We're proud to have a university with a rich and successful athletic history. But we're also proud of a university where students are free to reach their potential without facing discrimination. That freedom is promised to us in the Penn State Principles, which say that all students have the right to participate fully in the Penn State community without fear of intimidation, harassment or discrimination. Some day, I will be damn proud if and when my children choose to attend Penn State. I'll happily drive them to East Halls with every Penn State flag, magnet and bumper sticker I can find. And if Ty Strohl's kids aren't there, I can only feel sorry for them for missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime: an education at a great institution with both great athletics and great values. Ty Strohl thinks he went to "Pathetic State." Lucky for us, he's wrong. We are Penn State, and we are proud of the values we hold.
