News in Brief

Graffiti found on borough statue

Graffiti was found Saturday on the eagle statue in front of the State College Municipal Building, 243 S. Allen St., and on the generator behind the building, State College police said.

The incidents were the latest in a series of similar markings in the area, Cpl. Barrett Smith said, adding that two or three incidents are being reported daily.

"It's quite common at this point," he said.

The State College Borough Council is expected to discuss graffiti during its meeting tonight at 7:30 at the Municipal Building.

Fraternity presidents cited in fight

Alpha Tau Omega and Alpha Sigma Phi fraternities were involved in a "large" fight early yesterday morning on the 300 block of East Fairmount Avenue, State College police said. Police said both fraternity presidents will be cited but gave no damage estimate.

Plan proposed to revamp Urban Village

EDSA Inc. and Delta Development Group presented their urban revitalization plan for the area west of Atherton Street to the State College Borough Council Friday.

The plan, which culminated from a series of public meetings, included 15 goals and 40 suggestions, mostly regarding zoning. Known as Urban Village, the revitalization plan does not have a formal title yet; however "the west end" was suggested as a possible name by Delta.

The council will review the report and discuss the projected plans at its April 9 meeting.

Festival ends with 'taboo' performance

Tonight, as the last performance in the Cultural Conversations festival, a play by a Penn State professor will offer a look at what it is to be black and gay in America.

Tonight's performance, which is at 8 in the Pavilion Theatre, is a reading of theater professor Steve Broadnax's play American Taboo.

The drama is about a young black educator who has to face his own sexuality through therapy to be able to live a happy life.
