The future of student government will become a little clearer this Sunday when the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) will make a decision regarding the potential student government merger with the now-defunct Undergraduate Student Government (USG).
UPUA has drafted a resolution that would accept USG's requests and outlines several changes it needs to make to combine with USG.
Mike Anderson, co-sponsor of the resolution, said the committee discussed what was best for the student body at large.
"We're not really worried about this fight between USG and UPUA," he said. "We like democratic student government. We're really bonding on the fact that we both want to do what's best for students."
Anderson said the resolution concentrates on issues the committee and USG agree on, like adding more checks and balances to UPUA and increasing power UPUA has in university decision-making.
According to the resolution, "Students deserve to be involved in governance of this University, and UPUA should be the means through which this end is accomplished."
The group tasked with making these changes, UPUA's constitutional review committee, will hold an open meeting today at 3 p.m. in 235 HUB-Robeson Center, during which it will likely finalize its recommendations.
Ralph Crivello, UPUA constitutional review committee chairman said the committee had already "taken into consideration" the directives outlined in the resolution.
"We have addressed the issues that USG has raised," he said.
Crivello estimated that the committee would be able to meet the April 9 deadline for presenting its recommendations to UPUA's general assembly. The internal development committee will review the recommendations before they are voted on.
The general assembly meeting to debate and vote on the resolution will take place Sunday at 5 p.m. in 302 HUB and will be open to the public.
Henry Hund, USG chief of staff, said the USG trust, which is composed of former USG members, would likely have at least one representative present at the meeting.
"I think the goal would be to help answer any final questions they have before making a decision," he said. "Either way, I'd like to know what they think."
The deadline for UPUA to accept USG's proposal falls the Monday after the UPUA meeting, so if they do not accept the merger, it would essentially be a rejection.
