"Something tells me it just got a little bit easier to be a pimp out here," Jon Stewart quipped after Three 6 Mafia won an Oscar for its song "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp".
But the guys from Three 6 Mafia, DJ Paul and Juicy J, haven't had it all that easy. Since the Oscars, the duo has entered a whirlwind. They've worked with Paris Hilton, moved from Memphis to Los Angeles, and recorded a new album.
Amidst all the chaos, the group also filmed a new MTV show, Adventures in Hollyhood, which premieres April 5 at 10 p.m. Juicy J said the show's concept is "Three 6 Mafia coming out to Hollywood trying to make it and record our album as well."
While the group has certainly undergone changes in the past year, it had been evolving long before. The duo started out as a horrorcore rap group, a style full of controversy. Horrorcore, unlike mainstream hip-hop, relies on dark musical themes within the production as well as illustrative lyrics about topics from homicide to Satanism. But Three 6 Mafia, once rumored to be Satanist, has certainly changed its tune.
"The only thing that changed was that we had to start making songs for the radio," Juicy J said. "We had one song on the radio that was made specifically for the radio. But other than that, everything was made straight for the streets. Once we got the record deal with World Domination in '97, we had to start making songs for the radio."
Now that the duo is making platinum records and winning awards, the unfriendly tone of horrorcore has gone out the door. The group has expanded its list of collaborators, which now includes Paris Hilton. Juicy J said the celebrity was surprisingly down-to-earth.
"Working with Paris Hilton is kind of like working with a rapper," Juicy J said. "She's rich, but she doesn't act stuck-up or nothing. We go to parties; we hang out, free drinks all night."
After working with Hilton, the group hooked up with a number of high-profile rappers and other artists for its new album, Last 2 Walk. Aside from recording new single "Doe Boy Fresh" with Chamillionaire, Three 6 Mafia enlisted the help of Paul Wall, Lyfe Jennings, Crime Mob, Lil' Jon - and Good Charlotte.
"We got a song with Good Charlotte on here," Juicy J said. "We had a song with Saliva on one of our albums before. But this time we're producing a track with Good Charlotte's production team. They're like personal friends. We hang besides the music."
With the group expanding its horizons to the points of pop-punk/hip-hop hybrids, Three 6 Mafia refuses to quit while it's ahead. In reference to Stewart's other joke, "Scorcese, zero; Three 6 Mafia: one," Juicy J had more on his mind.
"You can't even make that joke anymore," Juicy J said, now that Scorcese got his Oscar. "That was a funny joke or whatever, but I wouldn't have said it. I love the dude; I wish we could work together. Then we could get an Oscar together. We'd be at two and two."
