Going 'Crazy'
Penn State Thespians to perform musical this weekend

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State Thespians is "crazy" about musicals.

So much, in fact, that the group is performing Crazy for You at the Schwab Auditorium tonight through Saturday. The musical is an adaptation to the 1930 George and Ira Gershwin-written musical, Girl Crazy.

Crazy for You is the story of Bobby Child, a well-to-do 1930s playboy whose dream in life is to dance. And despite the efforts of his mother and soon-to-be-ex-fiancée against him, Bobby achieves his dream. Memorable Gershwin tunes include "Bidin' My Time," "I Got Rhythm," "They Can't Take That Away from Me," "Embraceable You" and "Someone to Watch Over Me."

"It's a high-energy comedy which includes mistaken identity, plot twists, fabulous dance numbers and classic Gershwin music," Shana Lombardi (sophomore-education and English) said.

Founded in 1897, The Penn State Thespians is the oldest continual student organization on campus. Its mission is to provide students with educational experience in all aspects of dramatic production and present theatrical entertainment to the surrounding community.

"Every aspect of production is staffed by students except for our role of producer, which is faculty adviser. We vote at the end of the spring semester for the shows for the following year. Then we audition six weeks before each show for all the roles," Nick Semon, Penn State Thespians vice president, said.

According to director James Marsh (sophomore-theatre), this show is unlike any other modern show.

"What I like most about this show is that it's so different from most modern shows. It brings you back to the golden age with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire. It doesn't have the attitude and edge that modern musicals have. Instead it has lots of love, dance and singing," Marsh said.

Marsh said he has never worked with such a committed group as the Thespians.

"Directing the show is amazing. Everyone contributes 110 percent in the show. I've never worked on a student-run project that was so on the ball," Marsh said.

Semon said this show should not be missed.

"This show is a little different than the typical show the Thespians do. It's a more spectacle-based show.

There's a bigger set, bigger dance numbers and bigger musical numbers. It's huge," Semon said.
