Zolof to play on campus

Collegian Staff Writer

A power pop band might be just what the doctor ordered.

Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer, the boisterous power pop band from just outside Philadelphia, will be headlining this weekend's Pollock Rec Room show with its self-described "cute pop rock with evil undertones."

"They're really poppy and really fun," said Andrew Visnovsky (sophomore-political science), president of The Asylum, the student-run group that put the show together. "The music and the live show are upbeat and happy, and they have some ridiculous songs about pirates and stuff."

Lauren Graham (sophomore-media studies), Asylum treasurer, has been to several Zolof shows in the past and said the band was "energetic" and played "fast, happy music."

"They're so upbeat," Graham said. "It's a really fun time, even if you've never heard any of their music before."

Graham said Asylum tries to get a lot of different types of bands to play shows.

"We've never had them before," she said. "We wanted to build a show around them, and after the exposure they got on MTV, now is the time."

Last December, Zolof finished as a runner-up in MTV2's Dew Circuit Breakout.

Rachel Minton, who sings and plays keys for Zolof, said this is the first time the band has ever had a really permanent bass player in a long time, and that the current incarnation of the band, which has undergone several lineup changes in the past, is "a solid lineup." She also said every one of the band's shows is different, so even if you've seen it in the past, you still might get something completely new.

"We never really plan it," Minton said. "We have set lists, but we'll play extra songs based on what people yell out. It depends on the crowd. If the crowd is into it, if the whole room is dancing, it's more fun for us, and it makes for a better show."

Duet All Night Long, an EP of covers performed by Zolof and Reel Big Fish, was released in February. Minton said the band probably wouldn't play any songs from it, since the duets were with a singer from another band, but she said Zolof will be playing some brand new tunes from the album it's currently recording. The band is currently unsigned and in discussions with labels, and that they're also considering an independent release.

In addition to Zolof, Marigold (which Graham said has a completely different lineup and a completely different sound from the last time it was here), Capitol Risk (who Graham said is "kind of blowing up right now"), Pfunkt and Acalasia will be playing as well.

"It's a free show," Minton said. "You've got nothing to lose."
