More than 100 people gathered around a Rainbow flag, spread over the steps of Old Main, at noon today to participate in the annual Pride Week Rally, sponsored by SpeakOUT.
Free t-shirts were given out with Pride Week's theme: "Camp it UP: Our history becomes us." Several speakers addressed the crowd during the rally to define the word 'camp' and encourage support for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender people and their Allies (LGBTA).
Darryl Watson, president of Black Caucus, said 'camp' is an expression used to attack the preconceived notions of social order.
"I saw the inherent revolutionary power of camp," Watson said.
He compared the activism of LGBTA students to the revolutionary actions of civil rights leaders, biblical characters, and gay and lesbian rights activists of the past.
The event was confronted with an alternative viewpoint as one onlooker held as sign that read "Do not condone homosexuality."
