Movin' On chooses acts

Collegian Staff Writer

For Penn State students who watched The O.C. during its four-year run, or for everyone with a soft spot in their hearts for power pop, the headliner of this year's Movin' On should be familiar.

Phantom Planet, a band best known for its song "California" that served as the theme song for The O.C., is slated to headline the main stage of this year's free music festival at the HUB Lawn April 28, Jameela Truman, director of Movin' On, said.

Truman said the band, which was booked for $15,000 this year and played the Bryce Jordan Center in 2005, has developed many fans.

"They have a couple albums out right now, The Guest being the biggest one, and they have another album in the works," Truman said. "They have a good following."

Joining Phantom Planet on the main stage of the free festival will be indie-progressive band Days Away, alternative rock outfit Piebald, skate-punk quintet Authority Zero, power-pop group You, Me, and Everyone We Know and hip-hop duo Kidz In the Hall.

"Authority Zero, they're more of a reggae-sounding band," Truman said. "I tried to keep it diverse as possible."

Truman also said the inclusion of hip-hop artists such as Kidz In the Hall was important to the committee.

"There's not a lot of hip-hop shows that happen at this school," Truman said. "A lot of people do like hip-hop, it's just that they don't bring hip-hop artists around."

Movin' On Public Relations Director Danielle Shavell said the festival's diversity is one of its strengths.

"I think it's really important to try as hard as we can to reach out to every type of music," Shavell said. "We want people to be able to come out and hang out all day."

The festival will have a somewhat local feel for Days Away, a band that hails from near Philadelphia. Shavell said the band has had success in that area.

"They've opened for bands like The Starting Line," Shavell said. "I just know them from opening for a bunch of bands around Philadelphia."

Tracey Morgenstern, Movin' On volunteer and member of the core committee, suggested Piebald as a candidate for the main stage.

"They're just a lot of fun and you can sing along to them," Morgenstern said. "Whenever me and my friends have parties, we end up rocking out to Piebald. And they put on a good live show."

Beyond the main stage, Shavell said the side stage would include metal band Anamide and ska outfit No Outlet. In addition to the bands already announced, the winners of a Battle of the Bands at the HUB-Robeson Center on April 13 will also play the main stage.
