Letter to the Editor
Meat is an ethical option

I was intrigued to read the letter, "Vegan lifestyle a humane choice" (March 23). Author Pulin Modi stated that "Students go to school to be informed and apply their knowledge to the real world." I'm not sure where he got his facts from, but being informed means being informed on all levels of all pertinent information. Anyone can find facts that they want to find to support their emotions, but an educated person will find all of the information.

The meat, milk and eggs raised in this country are raised under strict guidelines put forth not only by the government but also by the wholesalers that purchase the commodities from the farmer and process them for sale to you. If you are concerned about the humanity of which your food was raised under, do your own research of the company. For instance McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's all have animal welfare or animal handling policies that you can find on their Web site. Their policies are often more strict than government regulations and are written by some of the nation's leading animal scientists. Also, because of their purchasing power they have been able to influence the entire industry's practices.

In closing, know your facts and rest easy that, meat, milk and egg producers like myself do care for our animals and take pride in raising them in the most ethical and responsible way possible.
