Conference loss a step backward

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's tennis team had its four-game winning streak snapped by the Michigan Wolverines on Friday at the PSU Indoor Tennis Center.

The Lions were defeated, 5-2, despite the efforts of sophomore Dorothy Dohanics and freshman Lauren McCarthy.

"They've [Dohanics and McCarthy] been great for us this year," Penn State coach Buffy Baker said. "That's the beauty of college matches; it doesn't matter where you get your points from."

Dohanics and McCarthy defeated Elizabeth Exon and Allie Shafner, 6-1, 6-3, in doubles play. Dohanics later defeated Exon, 6-2, 4-6, 10-7, in a tight, No. 5 singles match. McCarthy defeated Shafner convincingly 6-1, 6-3 in her No. 6 singles match.

The rest of the Lions put up disappointing performances, being defeated easily by the Wolverines.

Michigan, also riding a four-game winning streak heading into Friday's matchup, showed good poise in its victory over Penn State.

"Michigan showed us they would find our weaknesses, and we folded first," Baker said.

Senior Wolverine Jenny Kuehn and sophomore Chisako Sugiyama posted an 8-4 doubles victory over Penn State sophomore Lauren Holzberg and senior Sasha Abraham. Senior Kara Delicata and freshman Tania Mahtani defeated Penn State freshman Sarah Lotto and junior Jenny Shular, 8-3.

Kuehn, Sugiyama, Delicata, and Mahtani proceeded to win their respective singles matches as well.

"I was very disappointed in doubles," Baker said. "We were unwilling to make adjustments in our game plan."

With the loss, Penn State will be looking to rebound this weekend with home matches against Big Ten foes Iowa and Minnesota this Friday and Sunday.

"We took a major step back," Baker said. "We played scared."
