Race doesn't define student

Last Wednesday, while walking down College Avenue a young man yelled out of his pickup truck, "quit looking at me n-----". Now it must be said the concern is not whether or not I was looking at him but rather that he felt so comfortable that he was able to express his sentiments in such an open manner. And because he has been allowed to share his attitudes, I feel it only fair for me to be allowed to express mine. However, I assure you my comments will not be littered with negativity or racial remarks. To you, sir, whoever you may be, my name is not "n-----." My name is daughter, companion, niece, ally. I am an individual with an identity that has nothing to do with what you think represents black culture. By no means will I assume that your opinions are representative of the majority of Penn State students, many of whom I know as friends. And so in conclusion, dear sir, I hope that you feel better. I hope that you've gotten it out of your system. In fact, I am fairly glad that your comment was directed at me in secret and on a dark road because I now have the opportunity to place a shining light on your actions. I will continue to live life unfazed by your opinions about me. My name is not "n-----." My name is friend, and perhaps one day you will see this.
