Woman fails to yield, causes car crash

After a head-on crash on the 2000 block of East Park Avenue Friday caused both cars to fly into the air, State College police said a Mill Hall woman had to be extricated from her vehicle and transported to the hospital with a fractured leg.

Katherine Dickinson, 21, of Fallen Timber, was traveling east on East Park Avenue in a red Pontiac Sunfire when she attempted to turn left at the intersection for Route 322 westbound, according to the accident report.

Upon turning left into the intersection, police said she struck Donna Smith, 50, of Mill Hall, who was traveling west on East Park Avenue.

Dickinson told police she was given a steady green light but not a green arrow. She takes "full responsibility" for the crash and admitted to failing to yield to Smith, according the report.

Both cars sustained heavy front-end damage, and Smith's vehicle also had driver's side damage, police said. As of yesterday afternoon, Smith was no longer listed as a patient at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

Seminar to include lease information

The University Park Undergraduate Association and former members of the Undergraduate Student Government are sponsoring a free lease seminar 7 p.m. Tuesday in 101 Thomas.

The event, part of the Know Your Rights campaign, will include information about what students should read before signing a lease, recourses if problems arise, lease clauses that are unenforceable, how to properly handle conflicts with realtors and an individual lease review session with Andy Shubin, a local attorney.

Off-campus housing topic of forum

State College Mayor Bill Welch will join State College Chief of Police Tom King and State College Borough Manager Tom Fountaine to speak to students about off-campus housing this week. There will be a question-and-answer session for students to find out more information about life in State College. The forum, sponsored by the Off-Campus Student Union, will take place Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Mars Room in Johnston Commons.
