From belly dancing to a song titled, "I Wish I Had Dean Brady's Beard," the students of Schreyer Honors College vied for first place last night in the Mr. And Ms. SHC Pageant.
In the end, Farnaz Farhi and Brad Einstein were crowned Mr. and Ms. Schreyer's Honors College.
Simmons Dining Commons hosted the pageant, which began at 8 p.m. to a room full of restless students.
With more than a hundred students in the audience, the contestants competed for the top spot.
The $3 admission fee went toward UrbanPromise Ministries located in Camden, N.J., an organization that helps kids stay off the street by providing them mentorship and proper schooling in a town that has a murder rate seven times that of the national average, Deanne DeCrescenzo, the event's emcee, said.
By the end of the pageant, $400 was raised for UrbanPromise.
The pageant began with a choreographed dance followed by a formal wear segment where the ladies and gentlemen came out in suits and dresses, trying to woo the crowd. Chris Lucas (junior-chemical engineering and mathematics) was the first to come out in a suit with the emcee, stating that by the time he was two years old, Lucas knew the first one hundred digits of Pi.
The students displayed their various talents in the next segment.
Lucas, a crowd favorite, did an a cappella rap.
Greg Tallman (freshman-finance) performed a dance featuring classics such as "Thriller," "Can't Touch This," and "Bye, Bye, Bye."
The guys roused the audience, who eagerly anticipated the girls' performances.
The boys in the audience were very pleased by Farhi's belly dance, whistling loudly at her performance.
The next segment was academic wear.
Noris Pasic (sophomore-economics) wowed the judges with his model wear a la J. Crew. Lucas did the complete opposite decked out in gym attire with books in hand, stumbling, and even falling, down the aisle.
Kylie Nellis (freshman-journalism) was in full nerd uniform with shorts up to her rib cage and glasses with tape in the middle.
The last portion of the pageant was an interview.
One judge asked Tallman, "Pirates or Ninjas?"
"Arr, Johnny Depp anyone?" Tallman replied.
The audience left the show pleased with one student loudly shouting that he could not wait for next year's pageant.
