Greeks use game show to help kids

For The Collegian

A chorus of groans came from fraternity members when read the question: "What are the most popular places downtown to shop for girl's clothing?"

Their opponents, members of sororities, rattled off the five correct answers.

Thirty sororities and fraternities heard Penn State-related questions while participating in Sigma Delta Tau fraternity's 25th annual Fraternity Feud game show Saturday afternoon at Delta Upsilon fraternity, 229 Locust Lane.

By the end, the sororities won the event, with first and second place going to Pi Beta Phi sorority and Chi Omega sorority, respectively. However, the men of Phi Sigma fraternity, 255 Highland Ave., were given the award of 'most spirited.'

The event successfully beat its total from last year by raising more than $5,000 for Sigma Delta Tau's national philanthropy, Prevent Child Abuse America. Last year, the group raised about $4,000.

Money was raised for the event two ways. Each sorority and fraternity paid a fee of $60 to enter the game, while various downtown restaurants donated about 15 gift certificates to be raffled off throughout the afternoon.

Teams of five sorority or fraternity members heard questions such as: "What is the most popular food delivery?"; "What is the most popular Penn State sport?"; and "What are the best apartment buildings to live in?"

Upon hearing the question during the game, which was played similarly to the television show Family Feud, contestants were asked to shout out the word "buzz" before they could answer. Members of Sigma Delta Tau fraternity created the questions and polled various students for the most popular answers.

Some of the contestants went into the game with confidence while others were nervous about the outcome.

"We don't know what to expect," said Alix Porreca (freshman-division of undergraduate studies), one of the representatives for Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. "It's nerve-wracking because there are so many people watching us."

Contestants sat in the audience waiting for their turn in the seat, cheering on each team. All of the contestants were given identical shirts to wear displaying the game motto, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the seat."

"Part of being greek is participating in events like this ... it's a lot of fun when we get all the greeks together," Allison Altdoerffer (sophomore-advertising and public relations) said.

Some of the contestants said they participated because the event was well-known and entertaining, while others said they came for the cause.

"It's very important to help children who are less fortunate; not everyone has had the same opportunities that we have had in life," Sigma Delta Tau sorority member Paige Friedman (freshman-communications) said.
