Tim Shaw sprinted, shuffled and juked his way into a lot of NFL scouts' notebooks during Penn State's Pro Day yesterday.
The senior linebacker's results included a 4.42 time in the 40-yard dash, a 10-foot, 6-inch broad jump and a 6.68 run in the three-cone drill, according to the agency that represents Shaw (X-A-M Sports & Entertainment).
"In terms of numbers, Tim Shaw put up some good [ones]," said an NFC Scout, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "He ran faster today than he did at the Combine."
Shaw's numbers are now among the highest for linebackers entering the NFL Draft. Florida State's Lawrence Timmons, who is a projected late-first round pick for example, ran a 4.63 in the 40 during the Seminoles' Pro Day last week.
Inside linebacker Patrick Willis, a possible top-10 pick and one of the quickest collegiate backers, out-ran Shaw in the 40 during Mississippi's Pro Day (4.37). But, Shaw bested Willis in the three-cone drill by nearly a half-second (6.68 to 7.10).
"The goal that I've been specifically working for is to be drafted on the first day," Shaw said yesterday. "If I [didn't], would it be OK with me? Yeah. But, ultimately, my goal is to not be that late. That's what I've been working toward."
If Shaw had consistently put up those numbers at the NFL Combine, he would've topped the linebacker charts (which average good and bad times alike) in those three categories: 40-yard dash, three-cone drill and broad jump.
But Shaw wasn't surprised by his improvement -- and not just because of his training since then.
It was hard to get any rest at the Combine, he said. And the pressure?
"Every second, somebody's watching you," Shaw said. "And you've gotta be ready for an answer every minute. It's the constant pressure of being alert and ready for that type of thing."
For Shaw, a typical day at the Combine entailed staying late for open interviews ("I wanna get myself known by as many people as possible," he said), enduring a sleepless night and then waking up at 6 a.m. for a drug test, which was followed by a brief breakfast and more drills.
"There's some tedious and boring stuff, taking tests and answering the same questions over and over: 'Tell us about your background. Tell us about your position. What did you go through? What did you do? Have you ever smoked, ever drank, ever been suspended?'
"Every team's gotta ask you that. And you have to do that 32 times."
So, when Shaw took similar physical tests yesterday, he said he was a lot more at ease.
Few questions, no classes to worry about, a good night's rest -- Shaw was in his element at Holuba Hall and undoubtedly improved his Draft stock for the second time in as many months.
"I'm enjoying it," Shaw said. "For a thing like a Pro Day or a Combine, that's something you look forward to -- and it's something that you're glad when it's over with."
