Ruggers waiting for place to play

Collegian Staff Writer

After spending a week playing on the opposite side of the Atlantic Ocean, another road match would not seem like a big deal for the Penn State men's rugby team.

However, tomorrow's game against Temple is the Ruggers' first round match in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) Championships, and it was expected to be held at the East Fields. After the snowstorm that hit State College last weekend, though, the game was forced to move, although they are not sure where just yet.

"It's unfortunate, because, of course, we'd like to play at home," Penn State head coach Don Ferrell said. "We've got good fields here, and I'm sure that [the team would] rather play here."

After spending a week playing difficult matches in England, Ruggers captain Auggie Manelick said the team was looking forward to playing on familiar ground.

"It really would help after playing over the break," Manelick said. "It would be great to play at home again."

At this point, it is uncertain where the match will be played. The most probable choice is Temple, but there is a chance that it will happen on a neutral site in Clearfield, about 50 miles west of State College.

Temple's style is not well-known to Penn State, but it has a good idea of what to expect. Manelick saw and played with some of its players during his time with the MARFU All-Star team.

"They've got some pretty good players," Manelick said. "They're an up-and-coming team."

Ferrell expects the Owls to come out strong, much like the other underdogs that the Ruggers have played this year.

Preparation seems to have been plaguing the Ruggers lately.

The team struggled at the start of its match against Kutztown before the break, and its worst loss in England came in its opener. However, things could be turning around after the trip.

"After our last match there, we immediately began focusing on Temple," Manelick said.

Manelick and Ferrell said the team came together over the break, which both think is important for a team looking to go deep into the playoffs.

Despite the team's unfortunate change of plans, Ferrell does not expect the outcome of the game to differ because of it.

"Over the past few weeks, we've had a lot of work on our team performance and our basics," Ferrell said. "We know what we need to do to get us through a playoff run."
