Intoxicated student rides stolen bike
A student who was found biking while under the influence early yesterday morning is expected to face charges, Penn State University Police said.
At 2:45 a.m. yesterday, a university police officer attempted to stop a Penn State student who was riding a bicycle without a headlight along Bigler Road near McCoy Natatorium, police said. Police said the bicyclist fled on his bike but then crashed it and continued running until the officer apprehended him near Ritner Hall. Police said the student was intoxicated and under 21 years old. He was also riding a stolen bike, police said.
Police released the student to his roommate. The investigation is continuing, but police would not release the student's name because he has not been charged yet.
Ride to remember professor, bicyclist
Bicyclists will ride from the Allen Street Gates to Warner Boulevard in Boalsburg on Sunday to remember Penn State professor Bohdan T. Kulakowski, who was killed after being hit by a van while he was riding his bicycle along Boalsburg Road March 22 last year.
The ride will begin at 3 p.m., Paul Simpson, vice president of the Center Region Bicycle Coalition, wrote in an e-mail message. Participants are asked to bring flowers, which will be carried in bike trailers to Kulakowski's memorial on Boalsburg Road, he wrote. He added police will escort the riders.
Dorota Smith, Kulakowski's daughter, said she would be attending the ride along with Kulakowski's wife and brother. She said local bikers and some of Kulakowski's former colleagues from the university would also be there.
Thomas Fry, who was driving the van that hit Kulakowski, is charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, reckless and careless driving, and disregarding a traffic lane.
He is expected to plead guilty Tuesday to unspecified charges in exchange for a plea agreement, Centre County District Attorney Michael Madeira said Monday.
Man charged with assault, harassment
A State College man was charged with misdemeanor aggravated assault yesterday for allegedly kicking and spitting blood at State College police officers early yesterday morning as he was being treated for an alcohol overdose, police said.
Robert Hamman, 42, will also be charged with a felony count of aggravated harassment by a prisoner for spitting a bodily fluid -- his blood from facial cuts -- at two officers, police said.
While Hamman was being treated at the Mount Nittany Medical Center, police said he became disorderly and resisted arrest. As he was being transferred to the police department, police said Hamman kicked the rear window out of the back of squad car.
Medical examiners came to Hamman's holding cell to conduct a checkup on him, during which police said he spit blood and kicked an officer in the groin area. Hamman was taken back to the hospital to be sedated.
Video of the incident from a camera cell phone was entered as evidence, police said.
