Graduate students pick new leaders

Collegian Staff Writer

About 20 graduate students voted in the Graduate Student Association (GSA) elections, which were held during its meeting last night.

Joseph Gyekis, who currently serves as a GSA graduate council representative, was elected president. Georjanne Williams, who also serves as a graduate council representative, was elected vice president of external affairs. The rest of the executive board remains unfilled.

Gyekis said he would focus on several goals next year, including creating a position to hear the concerns of graduate students across the university, increasing GSA's involvement in social activities and clarifying the tax issues between university and working graduate students. Gyekis said he was especially looking forward to working with administrators.

"We'll work together with the administration to help their initiatives and hopefully collaborate on our initiatives," he said.

Williams said she wanted GSA to provide "more service to graduate students" next year. She will also continue her role as graduate council representative in addition to her duties as vice president next year.

"The positions go together," she said. "I think it fits nicely."

Raghavan Balaji, current GSA president, said the 11 GSA positions remaining open would be filled at another GSA meeting on April 4. He said the turnout for the elections was "especially low" because the GSA had trouble advertising the elections.

The new GSA members will officially take office at the end of this semester.

Tim Frazier and Brian Borawski were elected to two of the five GSA judiciary seats. Frazier was also elected to the University Faculty Senate, along with Will Diehl. Jessa Dechant and Williams will fill two of the four graduate council seats. Lindsey Kittelberger will serve as public relations officer, and Borawski will also serve as the student adviser.
