Collegian Staff Writer

Charlie Murphy will be bringing his free stand-up act of true Hollywood stories to the Eisenhower Auditorium Saturday night.

In the past, the semesterly comedy show has been held in Alumni Hall. However, this weekend it will be held in Eisenhower Auditorium, to hold a larger crowd.

John Harlow, assistant director of student activities, said that Alumni Hall can only safely hold 1,200 guests, and that at previous events they have had to turn away students for larger acts.

For example, at last fall semester's show with Dave Coulier, about 600 students had to be turned away for saftey reasons.

So the reason for the relocation is simply because Eisenhower Auditorium can hold about 2,500 people.

Murphy said he has been in movies for a long time including his brother's latest blockbuster - Norbit, in which he provided the voice for the character of Floyd the Dog.

But he didn't get into standup until people who had seen him on Chappelle's Show asked him if he was interested in the field.

"It's all connected," Murphy said. "It's not an accident."

Murphy, who has worked with comedians like Dave Chappelle and his younger brother Eddie Murphy, said he has been influenced by a lot of other comedians as well.

"There's no way you can be around someone that important and not pay attention," he said.

In spite of the influences, Murphy said his act is still unique.

"It's my act," he said. "It's not like anybody else's. I'm my own boss; I'm the maker of my own fate."

Comedians Judah Friedlander and Jasper Redd willbe performing at the show as well.

Friedlander has been performing standup for 18 years.

He has been in movies such as American Splendor, Wet Hot American Summer, Zoolander and Meet the Parents. Currently he plays Frank Rossitano on NBC's evening sitcom, 30 Rock.

Friedlander is a self-proclaimed world champion, and said it that it is a big part of his act.

"The audience is going to hear me talk about how I'm a great athlete and how I get tons of chicks," he said.

Redd said he tried a bunch of things before becoming a comic, and he's happy with where he is now.

"I wanted to be a cartoonist or an animator, and I got into music and rapping," he said.

"I took a job as a janitor off and on for a few years, and when the opportunity [to do comedy] presented itself, I had nothing to lose," he said.

"I get to be a writer, director and performer all at once. It's a big high."
