Penn State Athletic Director Tim Curley announced today he will investigate photographs depicting an alleged hazing incident involving the wrestling team, promising to "take appropriate action against those involved."
The statement from Curley and wrestling head coach Troy Sunderland is posted on the wrestling page of GoPSUsports.com.
The photos show men stripped down to jock straps, with 40-oz. beer bottles duct-taped to their hands. The photos, taken from popular photo-hosting site www.Webshots.com, were sent last night in an e-mail message to The Daily Collegian, wrestling head coach Troy Sunderland and www.badjocks.com, a site that posts pictures and news of athletes in compromising situations. Badjocks.com published the photos this morning.
In a statement released today, Curley said the athletic department "immediately began gathering information from current and former members of the squad that may have been involved or there at the time."
In the same statement, Sunderland said he was "angry and upset at those involved."
"We are obviously very disappointed that our program was involved in such activities back in 2005," Sunderland said in the statement. "When the facts are clear, those involved will have to own up for their actions."
Pat Donghia, wrestling team spokesman, reiterated what was published in the statement.
"We've seen that photo on that Web site," Donghia said. "It is really disappointing."
