Tournament finish lacking improvement

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's golf team finished No. 14 of the 15 teams competing at the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas last weekend. The Nittany Lions finished with a total score of 971.

Top finishers for Penn State included senior Evelyn Paik, who tied for 31st place with a score of 237.

Paik has the led the team at both tournaments this spring, stepping up for the Lions and getting the job done under difficult conditions.

Junior Sara Lester came in behind Paik carding a three-round score of 241, for a No. 48 finish.

The Longhorn Invitational was only the second tournament of the spring season for the Lions, who were hoping to improve their No. 13 finish at Pinehurst two weeks ago.

Despite spending four extra days practicing before the tournament, head coach Denise St. Pierre said the team came up short.

"We're not necessarily pleased with where we ended up," she said. "We haven't played where we should be at this point in time and it's hard to say why that is."

Penn State faced tough competition at the invitational, battling Big Ten and Big 12 schools, including Purdue, Iowa, Baylor and Oklahoma.

Purdue finished No. 1 with a score of 907. TCU followed with a second-place score of 918, and Baylor rounded out the top three with 921.

"We really just need to do what we can to keep our heads in the game," St. Pierre said. "Each individual has got to do some internal searching to figure it out for themselves. They have the talent to do it but lack some confidence."
