Letter to the Editor
Student clears up facts

I couldn't help commenting on this speculation-ridden and factually inaccurate article covering the recent Political Science Association's debate on presidential primary candidates ("Political club jaded with presidential candidates," March 7).

First of all, senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are political powerhouses whose chances of winning the Democratic nomination are growing greater every day. In this very early campaign season, the window is closing quickly for any other Democratic candidate (save Al Gore) to raise the amount of money and name recognition needed to overcome the resources these candidates have already established.

I must contest the statement made by Mr. Cohen regarding the lessening chances of a Democratic win in 2008 if either Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama wins the nomination. These two candidates are the most likely to be able to overcome any Republican contender.

Their positions on issues are most in line with the Democratic base and the American people. The voting public showed their disillusionment with the Republican Party in the November elections and clear preference to Democrats.

This disillusionment is not likely to decrease, given the Republican candidates' affiliation with the Bush Administration.

Mr. Obama lived for four years in Indonesia with his mother and step-father, attending school in a secular Jakarta school.

He is fluent in Arabic and familiar with the Muslim faith, but he is also a dedicated Christian who attends the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. The notion he was brought up a Muslim and still is today is simply false.
