Three wrestlers remain in title contention

Collegian Staff Writer

Last night's session two of the NCAA wrestling championships saw four of the seven Nittany Lions drop out of title contention, knocking Penn State into sixth place overall, with three wrestlers heading to today's quarterfinal round.

Sophomore Jake Strayer, junior Phil Davis and senior Aaron Anspach each competed today in Auburn Hills, Mich. for the right to move on to the semifinal round, earning the title of All-American.

After scoring a pinfall at the 4:32 mark over Oregon State's Mark Gardener in the 197-pound weight class last night, Phil Davis was matched up against Cornell's Jerry Rinaldi in today's quarterfinals.

A scoreless first period would give way to the second, where Davis would score a takedown on Rinaldi and go up 2-0. Davis started the third period in the down position and scored another point with an escape. Rinaldi would rebound, however, scoring a takedown of his own, but immediately letting Davis up for the escape bringing the score to 4-2. The two-time All-American from Penn State would score another takedown in the waning seconds of the bout to secure his third All-America title and move to tonight's semifinals.

At heavyweight, Anspach also will advance to tonight's semi-finals as he earned All-America status after defeating Sacred Heart's Payam Zarrinpour in a close 5-4 match.

Going into the third and final period, with Anspach up 3-2, Zarrinpour chose the down position and scored an escape to tie the bout at three. Still tied near the end of the period, Anspach scored a takedown, gaining another two points and ultimately the victory. Zarrinpour would score another escape, but it was not enough to push the bout in to extra periods as Anspach won, 5-4.

After falling just one victory short of earning All-America honors at 133 pounds in last year's championships, Strayer entered the quarterfinal round with added motivation. Last night, Strayer defeated Iowa State's Nick Gallick, 4-2, to earn his quarterfinal matchup against Cal Poly's Darryl Vasquez today. However, the Nittany Lion sophomore would fail to score a takedown in the match on his way to dropping an 8-3 decision.

Strayer will move into the consolation bracket tonight where he will now take aim for third place.

One other Lion stayed alive in the consolation brackets today as three others fell. Freshman Dan Vallimont stayed in competition at 149 pounds by first defeating Boston's Mike Roberts, 10-6, and then downing Missouri's Joshua Wagner, 10-6. If Vallimont can defeat his next opponent, Indiana's Matt Coughlin, he will earn All-America status.

Vallimont's fellow freshman Bubba Jenkins fell in competition today as did junior Mark McKnight and senior James Yonushonis.

Competition will resume with the semifinals at 7 tonight.
