History not in Lions' favor

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's tennis team (4-6, 0-1 Big Ten) is looking to reverse a trend against the University of Wisconsin (3-8, 0-3) at 5 p.m. today at the Sarni Indoor Tennis Center.

Penn State is 1-16 against Wisconsin all time, its lone victory coming in 2001. Wisconsin won a 4-3 match against the Nittany Lions last year.

"We've had two close battles the past two years," Penn State coach Buffy Baker said.

But the Badgers are struggling heading into today's match. Wisconsin has not scored a point since its 4-3 victory over Marquette at home on Feb. 14. Since that match, the Badgers have endured three consecutive 7-0 losses to strong programs like Princeton, Indiana and Ohio State.

Wisconsin has played without the help of its No. 1 singles player, senior Caitlin Burke, who is out with a wrist injury, and her status for today's match is undetermined. Still, Baker knows her team will have to play extremely well.

"You can't take Wisconsin lightly," Baker said. "They are well-coached."

Penn State looks to continue its recent strong singles play, led by sophomore Dorothy Dohanics (8-5) and freshman Lauren McCarthy (6-7).

"There's a couple of people in our lineup that bring it every week," Baker said.

The Penn State singles squad posted a convincing 8-4 record in last weekend's series against Marshall and Middle Tennessee State.

The doubles squad, which Baker considers a strength, will be looking toward a quick start, as it usually does.

"We talk a lot about the energy and fire they bring to the court every week," Baker said.

Though Penn State suffered a 7-0 loss to No. 6 Northwestern two weeks ago, Baker believes playing that game early in the schedule was beneficial for Penn State.

"We competed at a pretty good level against Northwestern," Baker said. "They are the best team on our schedule. We've seen the best, and we know what to expect against our future opponents."
