PSU students should care about the recycling issue

I was glad to read Megan Rundle's column in which she encouraged students to recycle ("Students and State College need to improve recycling habits," March 7). With Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," environmental issues have become more publicized lately. Whether you believe in global warming or not, recycling is an environmental issue that many students do not care about, but really should. Landfills are not getting any smaller. My roommates and I end up with so much garbage on a weekly basis, I can only imagine how quickly it adds up when you account for the 40,000 students worth of trash at Penn State alone.

Even if there is an abundance of places for people to recycle, they still don't do it. I've seen my friends toss recyclables into the trash, even after I lecture them, just because it is second nature to do so. Recycling is something that just hasn't permeated most people's minds. It takes maybe five minutes to separate the recyclables from the trash, and yet many of us find that it's too much time out of our day to do our part to lessen the negative impact we have on the environment. One person can make a difference. We just need to make recycling known to be a worthwhile cause.
