Chances are, if you are a college student, you have heard of Ron Jeremy.
Amazingly, your father and grandfather have probably watched one of his movies back in the 1970s and 1980s.
Now the man who describes himself as "the greatest porn star who ever lived" is an author of an autobiography co-written with Eric Spitznagel called The Hardest (Working) Man in Showbiz.
Millions of awkward, lonely adolescent boys in this country know Jeremy for his enormous (ahem) talent and his cordially corpulent and hirsute frame. As the reader learns from the book, Jeremy's physical appearance earned him the nickname of the "Hedgehog" back in the late '70s.
Most of the book focuses on Jeremy's struggle to break into mainstream acting. It seems that the only time that anyone wants to use the Hedgehog in a mainstream film, it's just to bump him off.
Though parts of the book can drag at times, there are other parts that are more than worth the $25.95 purchase price.
Being a veteran of more than 1,700 adult films and laying claim to having more than 4,000 sexual partners, Jeremy has learned a few things about "love" that your high school health education teacher probably never taught you. These sections are called "Sex Advice from Dr. Ron Jeremy."
Jeremy's tale is an historic one. No other actor has been in the business as long as he has. The book records these exploits and performances with the early starlets in X-rated cinema - Marilyn Chambers and Seka - as well as the current sensations in the industry, such as Jenna Jameson.
Since Jeremy has been around for such a long time, he is also able to chronicle the changes of the industry. Jeremy began his career during the "golden age of porn" when blue movies were shown in theatres. Then he survived through the glory days of VHS releases and the recent trend of the Internet. For any true fan of adult entertainment, Jeremy's book is an essential collection from an historic figure in the business.
A life like Jeremy's is definitely colorful, as is the cover of the book, which employs red, white and blue imagery. After all, Jeremy's story is one of the greatest examples of the American Dream. Where else can a man known as the Hedgehog make love to thousands of beautiful women?
The artwork and photography inside the book seems like it was also chosen to sell as many books as possible. Thankfully, no pictures of a naked Jeremy appear. However, some women are shown topless. For those who may be offended by such images, they shouldn't pick up Jeremy's book in the first place. But for his true fans, those images and his jaw-dropping tales of debauchery will exceed expectations. Grade: A
