In recent pieces in the opinion section there was reference to urinal cakes talking about rape. While personally I find such cakes an unlikely deterrent of rape if that was their purpose as oppposed to generating dialogue (a more practical objective), I feel that the cakes could have had messages with greater potential impact inscribed. For example, "You have in your hand the ability to prevent teenage poverty." Teenage pregnancy is the biggest determinant of poverty in the United States and while people love to criticize the woman who put herself in such a compromising situation and has to live with the visible stigma of being a teenage mother, there isn't nearly sufficient cultural pressure on guys to own up to their responsibility. It takes two to copulate just as much as tango and a kid is a lot more than a deduction of a male's monthly paycheck. By impregnating a woman too young to take on the responsibilities of motherhood a male has just completely disrupted the life of someone they could well have claimed to love. Therefore, while targeting males about rape may have its uses, I think there are messages with greater chance of impact that could be freshening the restrooms.
