Students' habits may ruin future green space plans

In regards to OPP's plan to beautify Penn State by eliminating certain sidewalks to make way for more green space ("Campus will see greener spaces," Feb. 28), I say bravo. I think Penn State has a number of walkways that serve little to no purpose. Eliminating these unnecessary sidewalks will enhance what Penn State has been doing with its recent construction projects. On the other hand, my biggest concern with this noble idea is simply that people are creatures of habit. We've all seen students decide to cut the corner and walk through the grass to get to the intersecting sidewalk. With that said, who's to say that the students who have walked to Osmond or the HUB the same way for years aren't going to continue to walk that way? If beautification is the idea behind this plan, then there must also be plans to discourage students from walking through the new green space and replacing the former unnecessary sidewalk with a new, not-so-beautiful dirt path.
