Orchestra to play pieces from throughout history

For The Collegian

The Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra, which recently returned from a concert at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, will be bringing its talent back to Eisenhower Auditorium at 8 tonight.

"The pieces we will be playing are all by different composers and from very different periods throughout history," Gerardo Edelstein, director of the Philharmonic Orchestra, said. "Each piece is significant and unique in its own way."

The orchestra will be performing four pieces at tonight's show, including works by composers Richard Wagner, Gordon Jacobs, Ernst Bloch and Igor Stravinsky.

Alongside the orchestra, two Penn State students will be performing as featured soloists in separate pieces during the show.

Erica Levy and Ofir Tomer, two of the featured soloists, won this year's annual orchestra concerto competition and each year the winners are asked to play a concert with the orchestra.

"I am looking forward to the opportunity to perform with an orchestra," Levy said. "The Wednesday concert is a great program, and I feel privileged to be apart of it."

Levy is performing two movements on the flute from Gordon Jacob's Concerto for Flute and Strings and Tomer is performing the first movement of Ernest Bloch's Suite Hebraique on the viola.

"The students have been working hard all semester," Edelstein said. "They are a wonderful group with a lot of talent."
