Arts in Brief

Waring to showcase Open Mic night

From 9 to 11 tonight, Students Organizing the Multiple Arts (SOMA) will be holding its second monthly Open Mic night in the Waring Commons Study Lounge.

Sign-ups for 10-minute performance slots will begin at 7:30 p.m., Kelly Murphy, SOMA's public relations committee executive, said. The slots fill quickly, she said.

SOMA hopes to hold an Open Mic night monthly in Waring and is currently planning on continuing the events the first Tuesday of every month. Any acts, including comedy, music, poetry and other live talent, are encouraged.

Joint student bands to play tonight

The Concert Band and Symphonic Band will be joining forces tonight at 8 in Eisenhower Auditorium.

The annual concert will feature music professor Richard Bundy as conductor of the Concert Band and Professor Dennis Glocke as conductor of the Symphonic Band.

Bundy, who has been involved with the Concert Band for 27 years, said both groups are made up of predominantly undergraduate students. However, the Symphonic Band is made up of mostly music majors, while the Concert Band is made up of mostly nonmusic majors. Those who attend should expect a repertoire of music from the baroque period, such as Bach, and more contemporary music such as composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students and are available by calling 863-0255.
