Women's gymnastics continue success on road

Collegian Staff Writer

Both Maryland's gymnasts and fans learned this weekend to never underestimate Penn State's talent and pride.

In the Terrapin's small, high school-like gym, there were twice as many Penn State fans as there were Maryland fans, which helped the Penn State women's gymnastics team continue its winning streak by defeating Maryland 195.275-191.600 on Friday. Penn State came home with all four titles, three 9.900s and a season-high in the vault.

Freshman Rosie Smith shared the vault title with Brandi Personett and Maryland's Angela Ferg, all scoring a 9.850, a career-high for both Smith and Personett. Even with a rough warm-up, Smith said felt that this meet put her team and herself back on track to where they want to be in the vault.

"Warm-up did start out a little rough, due to the settings, but I think overall the team pulled it together during competition very well," Smith said. "I also feel like I am starting to get back to where I want to be after my recent back injury."

Along with Smith and Personett, freshman Allie Southard took fourth with a career-best of 9.825 and freshman Alexandra Brockway came in fifth with a 9.800. Personett said that the team is becoming consistent with landings, a weakness earlier in the season.

"In the gym, we've been training on landings and trying to save our bodies," Personett said. At the beginning, floor and vault were our weaknesses because of landings, but we've gotten a lot better and we're actually starting to stick it. Landings are very important in every event."

Personett claimed her fourth consecutive title in the floor exercise with her fourth 9.900 or higher score. Penn State swept the event with junior Aslynn Satterfield taking second with a 9.850, freshman Casey Rohrbaugh and Smith tying for third with a 9.800 and senior Ashley Mehrer taking fifth with a 9.700. Personett hopes that she and her team will continue to stay confident and consistent primarily on floor, but in the vault, beam and uneven bars as well.

Even with faulty judging, sophomore Katie Perret still captured her sixth title in the bars with an 9.825, while seniors Corissa Pirkl and Amie Olaes tied for third with 9.725. The team scored an overall 48.375 in the bars, its third lowest team score of the season. Perrett said that the team felt cheated with scores because judges appeared to not be up to par in judging.

"Normally, the judges start out with small scores, and they didn't this time," Perrett said. "One of the judges didn't seem to understand what he was doing either. We thought it was a little unfair and weird."

Perret also shared the beam crown with senior Stephanie Sullivan, both scoring a 9.900, Perrett's tie for a career high and Sullivan's sixth beam title. Rohrbaugh took third with a career high of 9.850 and Lindsay Borkan took sixth with a 9.725. After Borkan's fall last weekend, she said she worked hard to push herself in the gym last week to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Continuing its road tour, Penn State will travel to LSU this weekend. LSU is currently ranked higher than Penn State, but after defeating the Tigers in the Super Six Challenge back in January, the dual-meet win is in reach for the Lions. The team looks to clean up a few kinks prior to the next competition.

"I think we made some mistakes during the [Maryland] meet, but now we just need to go to practice this week and focus even more to get it back at LSU this weekend," Smith said.
