Student voices concerns about Penn State's future

Does anyone see what's happening to Penn State these days?

I have been here for four years and have never seen such a collusion of events that threaten our university. I am extremely worried about the future of Penn State, and you should be too.

Penn State is granting tenure to fewer faculty members, cutting costs for the university and allowing the administration to fire any deviant faculty member -- effectively ending free speech inside and outside the classroom. Penn State is no longer a public university, but is considered a "state-related" university.

Thus, our public right to free speech has been restricted to special "zones." What happened to UPAC? The students should decide how our astronomically high tuition is spent.

Additionally, the administration is now trying to get its hands on The Lion 90.7, our independent student radio station. What's next, a newspaper published by the administration?

I would like to voice my concerns to my Undergraduate Student Government, but they've just dissolved into the illegitimate UPUA. UPUA was prematurely recognized by the administration, has a president elected with only 758 student votes, and nearly all of its officers were appointed.

And don't even get me started on Rene Portland.

Enough is enough.
