Sorority members' fundraiser slaps on the 'cuffs
Some students make 'doing time' pay off

For The Collegian

Several sorority members spent Saturday afternoon raising money in a not-so-typical way -- they were handcuffed to strangers.

Alpha Delta Pi sorority held its first Jail and Bail fundraiser Saturday, donating all proceeds to Ronald McDonald House, the sorority's national philanthropy organization.

Those interested in the fundraiser showed up at the HUB-Robeson Center Saturday afternoon, where they were handcuffed to the members of the sorority.

Their "bail" money was set at $10, and they couldn't be set free until that money was raised. A sign was hung around the prisoners' necks saying they had been jailed and asking for people to give money so they could be set free. The couples set off to scour the campus, waving cups with "bail money" written on them.

While the duos received plenty of awkward smirks and laughs, State College showed its generous side, and most pairs were able to raise the bail money pretty quickly. Of the 40 people who signed up, many went out two or three times to collect.

Jon Slomka (freshman-business) was handcuffed to Lauren Ventola (junior- biology).

"We tried begging people in the line at the Waffle Shop, but mostly they just laughed at us," Slomka said. "So we rode the bus around for a while, begging for money from tour groups. Even the bus driver gave us some."

Alex Goldstein, a junior at Bloomsburg University, was visiting his friend Joe Aranowski (sophmore-energy business and finance) for the weekend, who signed him up to participate.

"[Aranowski] told me what it was, and I was just like, 'Woohoo, I'm getting locked to a sorority girl,' " he said.

Participants frequented the buses, the line of the Waffle Shop, 364 E. College Ave., and Eisenhower Auditorium.

"I know of at least one group who found out the times of when Hairspray was playing at Eisenhower and made sure that they were there beforehand to collect money from people as they went into the show," said Alpha Delta Pi sorority's philanthropy chairwoman Domenica Giuffrida (freshman-division of undergraduate studies).

The fundraiser is based on a long-standing tradition held annually by the sorority's George Washington University (GWU) chapter.

"The event has grown so much there that the whole community looks forward to it every year," Alpha Delta Pi sorority President Ann Marie DiPietro (sophomore-nursing and women's studies) said. "They even managed to 'jail' the GWU president last year."

Jail and Bail raised about $550 dollars, "which is really good for the first time doing the event," Giuffrida said.
