Wrestling comes up short at Big Tens

Collegian Staff Writer

The No. 11 Penn State wrestling team's bid for an overall Big Ten title fell short today, as did the hopes for individual titles for the 10 competing Nittany Lion participants.

Aaron Anspach posted the best showing for the Lions, securing a second place finish at heavyweight after falling to Minnesota's No. 1 ranked Cole Konrad in the finals.

The big surprise of the weekend came yesterday evening as No. 1 seed Phil Davis fell to Ohio State's J.D. Bergman in competition at 197 pounds.

Davis took fourth place today after losing again to Illinois' Patrick Bond in the consolation match.

Overall, the Lions will send Davis and Anspach, along with five other wrestlers to compete in the NCAA tournament later this month in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Junior Mark McKnight at 125 pounds, sophomore Jake Strayer at 133 pounds, freshmen Dan Vallimont (149) and Bubba Jenkins (157) and senior James Yonushonis at 174 pounds will be the other Penn State representatives attempt to earn their places on the national podium.
