Meets provide Lions 'last chance'

Collegian Staff Writer

For Penn State junior Ron Jules, the opportunity to make the NCAA Indoor Championships has come down to one last high hurdle.

Jules has been a consistent top performer for the Nittany Lions in 2007, but will need the best performance of his career, and some to qualify for the NCAAs.

He would likely need to run the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7.81 seconds to have a shot at nationals, a time one-tenth of a second faster than his personal best.

Still, Jules remains undeterred heading into this weekend's IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships at Boston University.

"I'm just gonna go to the meet and compete," he said. "My motivation is to just get it done. It could be my last race of the season, or it could it be my second to last."

Head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan made the decision to split up some of her Lions to compete in what are called 'last chance meets.' The athletes that have the best chances at qualifying for NCAAs will compete.

"We just got through with the Big Tens and next week is nationals, so anybody that is really putting together a performance at the national level or trying to hit the national marks is going to be competing," Alford-Sullivan said.

Senior shot putters Dane Miller and Steve Meyers will be traveling with Jules to Boston. Miller and Meyers have already thrown provisional marks, but will need to improve on their best throws to extend their season for one more week.

Junior Mark Miller will head to South Bend, Ind. to run the 800 meters in the Alex Invitational. Alford-Sullivan said that Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center is historically a great place to run middle distance, and she hopes that he can use that to his advantage.

Ryan Fritz is the only Lion that has already qualified for nationals. His jump of 7-feet, 3-inches at the Big Ten Indoor Championships currently ranks him fifth in the nation in the high jump.

Jules would love to join his teammate in Fayetville, Ark. next weekend for nationals, but he knows it is going to take a great performance from him to rank in the top 14 nationally.

"I don't want it to be my last one, so I need to go out and get nationals. That was my goal, to just get to nationals," Jules said.
